Bielefeld Puppet Plays | Tickets & Directions
The Bielefeld Puppet Plays are a place where nostalgia, closeness, and lively puppet theater come together in a very special way. At Herforder Straße 5-7, right at Jahnplatz in the center of Bielefeld, Dagmar Selje and her team have been performing for children, families, and adults for years. The small, finely designed hall with around 100 seats creates an immediate connection between the stage and the audience, which is rarely experienced in larger venues. At the same time, the theater remains open to many formats: classic puppet shows, children's theater, readings, comedy, music, and offers for groups. Those looking for a central cultural location with a personal atmosphere will find a place here that has consciously remained small and thereby possesses a strong character. The Bielefeld Puppet Plays stand for a theater that is approachable, loving, and craftily precise, going far beyond a purely children's program. ([selje-puppenspiele.de](https://www.selje-puppenspiele.de/))
Tickets, Prices, and Advance Sales
Those interested in the Bielefeld Puppet Plays often first look for tickets, prices, and the best booking route. This page is clearly structured: For children's performances, there is an advance sale through the Tourist Information Bielefeld in the Wissenswerkstadt as well as through bielefeld.jetzt, and remaining tickets are available at the box office starting 30 minutes before the performance begins. This is convenient for spontaneous visits but also manageable for families, school groups, and small visitor groups. The current price list states 10.50 euros for children's performances and 11.50 euros for adults, each with discounts, as well as tiered prices for groups of 25 or more. Additionally, there are special combo tickets with a play and a short workshop, as well as prices for evening performances. Therefore, those coming with multiple people should always check the respective type of performance, as the rates differ depending on the format. Discounts are also available for individuals with a student ID, Bielefeld Pass, or disability ID. This consciously targets a broad audience while remaining financially accessible. ([selje-puppenspiele.de](https://selje-puppenspiele.de/tickets.html?utm_source=openai))
Particularly helpful is the clear separation between advance sales, box office, and special bookings. Tickets for daycare and school performances are reserved exclusively directly through the theater, either by phone or email. This is sensible because often several people, a specific time frame, and sometimes additional information such as billing address or callback number are required. For visitors, this means: Those planning a normal theater visit can simply orient themselves to the online or tourist information advance sales; those coming with an institution book directly with the theater. The rules regarding vouchers and credits are also transparent: Returns or rebookings are generally only possible in case of cancellations or changes to the performance, and such vouchers can only be redeemed directly at the Bielefeld Puppet Plays. This provides planning security and simultaneously emphasizes the personal character of the house. ([selje-puppenspiele.de](https://selje-puppenspiele.de/tickets.html?utm_source=openai))
Directions and Parking at Jahnplatz
The location of the Bielefeld Puppet Plays is one of its greatest advantages. With the address Herforder Straße 5-7, the theater is located right in the city center, at the well-known Jahnplatz, precisely where Bielefeld is particularly well connected. The cultural office describes the location in Skala as central in the Bielefeld center and points to the good public transport connections by bus and train. At the same time, the city of Bielefeld indicates that there are no parking spaces directly at the event site, but several parking garages are located in the immediate vicinity. For guests, this means: Traveling by public transport is particularly convenient, while drivers should plan their arrival more with a nearby parking garage than with a direct parking space at the house. Especially in the city center, this is a real plus, as one can reach the theater without long walks or complicated detours. ([kulturamt-bielefeld.de](https://kulturamt-bielefeld.de/kultur-service/raeumlichkeiten/skala/?utm_source=openai))
The specific placement within the urban structure also helps with orientation. Jahnplatz is a central traffic hub in the Bielefeld city center, and Herforder Straße is one of the most important axes in this area. This makes the venue easily findable not only for locals but also for guests from the surrounding area. The cultural office even mentions a parking garage next to the house, which is particularly pleasant for event visitors because the walk from the car to the entrance can be very short. Those arriving by bus or train also benefit from the inner-city location, as the paths in the city center are manageable and well signposted. This creates a location profile that is unusually comfortable for a small theater: urban, compact, and yet easily accessible. This combination makes the Bielefeld Puppet Plays attractive for families with children, older visitors, and groups. ([kulturamt-bielefeld.de](https://kulturamt-bielefeld.de/kultur-service/raeumlichkeiten/skala/?utm_source=openai))
Seating Plan, Seats, and Atmosphere
The Bielefeld Puppet Plays consciously do not perform in a large, anonymous hall but in a very intimate environment. The theater hall is described on the website as having around 100 seats, while the cultural office states it accommodates 100 people with fixed benches. This compact size is no coincidence but part of the experience: The audience sits close to the stage, the reactions are immediate, and the performance gains a personal tension that is often missed in larger venues. This is precisely what makes the charm of a puppet theater. One does not watch from a great distance but experiences the performers, figures, and scenes in a closeness that makes even small gestures visible. A detailed public seating plan is not published on the website, but the fixed, manageable seating arrangement ensures clear and simple orientation. For visitors, this means: There are no complicated tier or parquet logics, but a very direct, easily readable room structure. ([selje-puppenspiele.de](https://www.selje-puppenspiele.de/))
Additionally, there is the special ambiance of the house. The theater is located in the premises of the former cinema Skala, and this nostalgic flair continues to shape the place today. The inviting foyer provides space for encounters, while the hall ensures closeness to the stage action. The cultural office also mentions practical equipment details such as heating, air conditioning, blackout, Schuko power outlets, and two makeup areas in the backstage area. Thus, the house is not only charming but also functional. For smaller events, puppet theater, improvisational theater, and small music formats, this is a very suitable environment. The combination of historical character, manageable size, and contemporary equipment makes the Bielefeld Puppet Plays a small cultural space with its own profile. Those sitting here do not experience a mass event feeling but a concentrated theater experience with personal contact. ([kulturamt-bielefeld.de](https://kulturamt-bielefeld.de/kultur-service/raeumlichkeiten/skala/?utm_source=openai))
Program for Children, Families, and Adults
The program of the Bielefeld Puppet Plays is significantly broader than the name might suggest at first glance. While there has been a focus on children's theater for many years, the website and the professional page of the Association of German Puppet Theater clearly show that families, teenagers, and adults are also addressed. Productions include, among others, adaptations such as The Dream Eater, The Little Water Man, The Race Between the Hare and the Hedgehog, The Story of the Bowl and the Spoon, A Sheep for Life, It Knocks at Wanja's Door at Night, or Mr. Squirrel Awaits the First Snow. Such titles show that the repertoire consists of well-known children's book materials, poetic narratives, and timeless character motifs. For visitors, this is a good sign: The program design is oriented towards literary templates, clear stories, and themes that can emotionally reach both children and adults. ([vdp-ev.de](https://www.vdp-ev.de/der-vdp/buehnen/bielefelder-puppenspiele/))
The house describes its cultural offerings as a mix of expressive puppet theater, comedy, and musical performances. This creates a special range. Those expecting only a classic puppet stage will be pleasantly surprised, as the profile ranges from child-friendly performances to poetic family evenings to formats that are also interesting for an adult audience. The professional page of the association also lists the Bielefeld Puppet Plays as a fixed house and a mobile performance operation, highlighting the practical experience of the team. In the categories for children and families, many of the more well-known pieces are listed, while there are also suitable productions for adults and teenagers. Thus, the theater is not a niche venue for a single target group but a continuously active cultural space with two levels: child-friendly accessible and artistically demanding enough for adults who enjoy puppet theater with character. ([selje-puppenspiele.de](https://www.selje-puppenspiele.de/))
The current date ranges on the website are also neatly structured: children's performances, adult performances, and offers for daycares and schools. This is particularly important for search intent, as many users search for a specific program type, not just the name of the house. So, those looking for dates, schedules, or programs for 2025 and 2026 will find a theater that organizes its content according to target groups and occasions. This makes the Bielefeld Puppet Plays manageable and family-friendly, but also attractive for culturally interested adults. The combination of well-known children's book classics, lively puppet play, and complementary cultural formats ensures that new reasons for visits arise repeatedly. ([selje-puppenspiele.de](https://www.selje-puppenspiele.de/))
History and Special Features of the Bielefeld Puppet Plays
The history of the Bielefeld Puppet Plays goes back a long way and gives the place a special depth. According to the official website, the theater was founded in 1948 by Helmut Selje in the bunker Ulmenwall. After that, there were three relocations within Bielefeld before the ensemble found a new home in 2016 at the Skala House at Jahnplatz. This development shows that it is not a stage that emerged in the short term, but a grown cultural institution with a long tradition. This is important for a location description because history and present are closely linked here: The theater bears the traces of its past but also appears very contemporary and lively. Dagmar Selje currently leads the house at the venue, and the professional page of the VDP describes the stage as lovingly designed, original, and child-friendly. This fits very well with the impression that the place conveys at first glance. ([selje-puppenspiele.de](https://www.selje-puppenspiele.de/))
Another special feature is the building itself. The Skala was once a cinema and has transformed into a cultural event venue without losing its nostalgic character. The charm of the old house, the original foyer, and the compact hall create an atmosphere that is distinctly different from many modern venues. At the same time, the house is not isolated but embedded in a small cultural network. The non-profit association Kulturpunkt Skala e.V. was founded in 2016 to support the puppet plays organizationally and financially and to maintain the spaces as a vibrant cultural place. The combination of theater, association, and engagement creates a place that is more than just a stage: it is a meeting point for culture in the city center. This also explains why, in addition to puppet plays, readings, comedy, cabaret, and music can take place here. ([kulturpunkt-skala.de](https://kulturpunkt-skala.de/))
The professional classification is also interesting. The Association of German Puppet Theater lists the stage as a professional theater with a fixed house and also mentions membership in relevant associations of the puppet and free theater scene. This underscores the artistic anchoring of the house in the German-speaking puppet theater. For those searching for reviews, photos, or a classification of the stage, this is an important signal: it is not an improvised venue but an established theater with profile, history, and scene connection. This combination of tradition, professional structure, and personal size makes the Bielefeld Puppet Plays so remarkable. Here, one does not experience an interchangeable cultural space but a stage with its own handwriting that has been working on the same artistic idea for decades: to make puppet theater close, understandable, and simultaneously poetic. ([vdp-ev.de](https://www.vdp-ev.de/der-vdp/buehnen/bielefelder-puppenspiele/))
Daycares, Schools, and Groups
Another important search and information area concerns daycares, schools, and groups. The Bielefeld Puppet Plays explicitly offer morning performances, making the theater particularly interesting for educational institutions. The website lists the current dates separately, and reservations are made directly through the theater by phone or email. This is often easier in practice than a general online sale because educational groups usually plan with several accompanying persons, fixed times, and an exact number of participants. The booking instructions are very specific: when reserving, the number of children, number of adults, callback number, name of the institution, and billing address should be provided. This clear structure shows that the theater regularly works with institutions and is attuned to their requirements. ([selje-puppenspiele.de](https://www.selje-puppenspiele.de/))
For groups, the price tiers are also relevant. The current price list states special conditions for children's performances for groups of 25 or more, as well as discounts for small groups of 10 or more. This makes the visit not only artistically appealing but also organizationally attractive. This is particularly important for school classes and kindergarten groups, as budgets and planning are often crucial. The theater also emphasizes that inquiries may sometimes take a bit longer because it is a small house with limited capacities. This is not a disadvantage but an honest indication of the structure of the operation. Therefore, those wanting to come with an institution should plan early and reserve the desired performance in good time. This way, dates, seats, and any special requests can be reliably coordinated. ([selje-puppenspiele.de](https://selje-puppenspiele.de/tickets.html?utm_source=openai))
Content-wise, the puppet plays are also very suitable for young target groups. Many pieces come from children's literature, are clearly told, and thematically relevant, such as motifs of friendship, courage, seasons, or solving conflicts together. This is ideal for group visits because the stories can be discussed well afterward. Therefore, those looking for kindergarten or school programs, morning performances, or group-friendly dates will find not just a stage here but a well-thought-out offering with educational potential. The Bielefeld Puppet Plays thus combine cultural education and theater experience in a way that is convincing both organizationally and content-wise.
We were there for the first time today and were thrilled. Just beautiful! The audience was wonderfully involved. The stage design, the characters, and the way it was presented were so lovingly done. Unfortunately, the theater isn't around the corner from us, otherwise we would definitely go regularly. My children and I really enjoyed it, and we definitely want to go back to this beautiful, warm puppet theater!

Dagmar Zell is a cozy puppet theater in the center of Bielefeld. The theater is housed in the Skala building, a former cinema that has preserved the nostalgic atmosphere of the past. The audience area is very close to the stage, creating a special atmosphere for visitors of all ages. The theater's repertoire includes a variety of performances for children. The shows last about 40 minutes, making them suitable for the youngest viewers. We visited this small chamber puppet theater in the city center and were very impressed. It's a perfect place for kids to enjoy great performances. We recommend it for a family outing.

A great experience for little kids (and adults). It was different from what I expected, the beautiful stage design and the way it was presented. Not a conventional puppet theater with a cutout and the puppeteers not visible, but Dagmar Selje was a visible part of the performance. That was wonderful. She acted and spoke in a child-friendly and very emotional way. My grandchildren were fascinated and thrilled. The whole atmosphere was very harmonious. That was the first, but not the last visit to this puppet theater.

Highly recommended. A small but fine puppet theater. Uncomplicated and very friendly staff. The performances have a great length that is also suitable for the "littlest" ones. Here, love is in the details. The kids love it.

The play "Three Friends" was very well received by our 3-year-old grandchild. It's suitable for toddlers, and there were no scenes that could scare our grandchild. It's good if the characters are known beforehand. Due to COVID, many seats were empty, which gave us a good view of the stage. The hall is downstairs, so it's not accessible for everyone.
