25 Years of Ulan & Bator: When Nonsense Celebrates a Birthday

A quarter of a century of Ulan & Bator should not be hidden among cake forks and polite birthday speeches. The unique comedy duo celebrates its anniversary on October 23, 2026, at the Neue Schmiede Bielefeld with “Surprise Two – 25 YES” – an evening full of favorite numbers, forgotten classics, big cabaret, and little grand deeds.

Comedy between Poetry, Cabaret, and Controlled Stage Madness

Sebastian Rüger and Frank Smilgies combine stand-up, cabaret, wordplay, physicality, dance, and singing into their own unique stage cosmos. Their punchlines do not always march directly to the funny bone. They take detours, turn unexpectedly, and end up where ordinary comedy would have long lost the city map.

The Anniversary Show as a Colorful Surprise Package

“Surprise Two” gathers known and unknown classics, favorite numbers, as well as forgotten and unforgettable small and large works. It also includes delicacies of another kind – those stage moments, where the audience initially gasps and shortly thereafter realizes that they are already laughing.

Improvisation with Precise Timing

Ulan & Bator work with a quirky mix of absurd associations, musical ideas, and direct audience interaction. The timing is spot on, even though the evening gives the impression that nonsense has just taken the wheel itself. Their comedy atmosphere thrives on surprising turns, visible joy in playing, and a stage presence that does not require a large material battle.

A Award-Winning Duo with Their Own Signature

The trained actors Sebastian Rüger and Frank Smilgies founded Ulan & Bator in 2001. Their style combines theater, cabaret, and comedy in an unusual way. For their work, they have received awards such as the German Cabaret Prize and the German Small Art Prize. Performances at Quatsch Comedy Club, NightWash, and in radio and television formats have made the duo known to a wide audience.

Conclusion: Laugh Live Instead of Just Being Surprised

Anyone in the mood for intelligent punchlines, absurd theater, musical ideas, and a real laughter experience will enjoy a special anniversary evening at the Neue Schmiede. Ulan & Bator celebrate 25 years of stage art not with nostalgic dust, but with energy, imagination, and plenty of surprises. Secure tickets and experience the comedy madness live.
