A melodious Canticle in the Rudolf-Oetker-Halle

Hermann Suter's oratorio The Lauds of St. Francis of Assisi brings the mystical Canticle of the Sun by Saint Francis of Assisi to Bielefeld on Friday, October 30, 2026. The Oratorio Choir of the City of Bielefeld collaborates with the Bielefeld Philharmonic under the direction of Hagen Enke to present a concert that blends late romantic richness, spiritual depth, and impressive nature poetry.

Between Devotion and Orchestral Brilliance

Suter translates the hymn to the sun, moon, wind, water, fire, and earth into a large-scale musical landscape. Grand choral scenes meet radiant orchestral passages and contemplative moments. The composition merges Gregorian-like lines, impressionistic colors, polyphony, and contrapuntal art into an oratorio of extraordinary atmospheric density.

Music That Makes Nature Audible

In nine movements, the work follows the stations of the Cantico delle Creature. The sound opens from an unaccompanied tenor in the style of Gregorian chant to multi-voiced choral fields and dramatic orchestral crescendos. A quadruple fugue in the third movement and the passacaglia in the fifth movement showcase Suter's masterful orchestration and the precise synchronization of choir, orchestra, and conducting.

A Concert Experience with Spiritual Power

The Rudolf-Oetker-Halle offers the colorful late romantic sound in a concert hall known for its acoustics and elegant Art Deco interior. Before the concert, an introduction starts at 7:15 PM. At 8:00 PM, the full stage performance unfolds: from the quiet breath of contemplation to the powerful sound of collective praise.
