Music from Middle-earth: A Sonorous Journey through Tolkien's World
On Saturday, November 14, 2026, the Bielefeld choir Quintenkomplott invites you to a special concert evening at the Bartholomew Church in Brackwede. Under the title There and Back Again, set to music and sung texts by J. R. R. Tolkien – music between myth, longing, heroism, and farewell.
When Middle-earth Begins to Sing
Tolkien's works are full of songs, poems, and orally transmitted stories. The concert focuses on this musical aspect of Middle-earth and transforms the writer's words into a multi-voiced concert experience. The choir Quintenkomplott, which has primarily been known for its interpretations of contemporary choral music, is venturing into new musical territory.
Choral Sound Meets Piano, Organ, and Voice
The program combines a cappella choral music with additional timbres. Max Jenkins and Tristan Lippold complement the evening as a duo on piano, organ, and with vocals. The program includes songs from Donald Swann's cycle The Road Goes Ever On and On, created in collaboration with Tolkien, as well as compositions from the Tolkien Ensemble.
Between Orchestration and Fantasy
Many of the used settings are less familiar to a broader audience than the film music of Howard Shore. Where original scores were hard to access or no choral version existed, the concert relies on arrangements and adaptations by choir director Bruno Götze. This creates an independent musical dramaturgy, illuminating the mythological expanse of Tolkien's world through voices, organ sound, and instrumental accompaniment.
Live Atmosphere in the Bartholomew Church
The sacred acoustics of the Bartholomew Church provide space and resonance for the choral pieces. Between clear synchronization, flowing harmonies, and expressive stage performance, a concentrated audience atmosphere is created. The concert evening is aimed at Tolkien fans as well as friends of sophisticated choral music, literary adaptations, and atmospheric church concerts.
Conclusion: A Journey That Continues in Sound
There and Back Again promises a musical expedition through the narrative landscapes of Middle-earth. Visitors will experience an evening of choral singing, organ, piano, and selected Tolkien adaptations – live, atmospheric, and far from ordinary concert programs. Admission is free; donations are welcome.
