Architecture as an Invitation to Rethink the Bielefeld Old Town

In the foyer of the Technical Town Hall, TH-OWL presents architectural designs for a currently underutilized plot opposite the Süsterkirche. The exhibition makes visible how students of the Detmold School of Design connect history, urban space, and contemporary architecture to create new visions for the future.

A Place Between Memory and Departure

At the center is the plot at the corner of Güsenstraße and Ritterstraße. Until World War II, the area was densely built up; today it mainly serves as a parking lot. The exhibition explores the urban development potential of this site and how a new building block can respectfully complement the Bielefeld Old Town.

Diverse Designs for a Vibrant Neighborhood

The architecture students developed various projects for the corner building during the summer semester of 2026. Their designs respond to the landmark buildings in the vicinity, the history of the neighborhood, and the special atmosphere around Süsterplatz and Süsterkirche. The presented concepts explore architectural perspectives between integration and contemporary independence.

Urban Planning as Cultural Education

The project opens up immediate access to urban development questions: How can architecture enliven public space? What uses strengthen the Old Town? And how can living, working, gastronomy, and retail be integrated into a future-proof building? Planned are, among other things, retail or gastronomy areas on the ground floor, apartments or offices on the upper floors, as well as alternatively a hotel. An underground garage is to accommodate the necessary parking spaces.

Architecture Between Neighborhood Character and Present

The project was developed in close cooperation with architect Andreas Hollstein and Ascan von Neumann-Cosel, the former head of the Lower Monument Authority. Together, the neighborhood character was examined as a design tool and practically tested in the students' work. The participants of the Bachelor's degree program in architecture were supervised by Prof. Jasper Jochimsen.

Art Experience in the Technical Town Hall

The exhibition combines architectural analysis, urban imagination, and aesthetic experience. Drawings, models, and design ideas vividly illustrate spatial effects, proportions, materiality, and usage concepts. Visitors experience architecture not as a finished product but as an open thinking process where historical responsibility and urban future meet.

Conclusion: Bielefeld's Old Town From New Perspectives

The exhibition invites viewers to look at the familiar urban space with sharpened eyes. Anyone interested in architecture, urban history, building culture, and the future of Bielefeld's Old Town will discover an inspiring panorama of student designs here. The art experience in the Technical Town Hall offers cultural education, concrete spatial ideas, and new perspectives on a central location in the city. A visit is particularly worthwhile for those who want to experience architecture live and engage in discussions about the development of urban spaces.
