Board Games: Art between Game Rules and Reality of Life
The exhibition Board Games at Open Atelier 63 is dedicated to an unusual encounter: artistic works were created together with inmates from elements of discarded board games at the Bielefeld-Brackwede prison. On October 9, 2026, the exhibition will open its doors from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Melanchthonstraße 63.
When Game Materials Find a New Language
Familiar imagery from Monopoly and Ludo is released from its original rule framework. Game pieces, game boards, and graphic elements appear in new contexts and become material for an independent artistic engagement. From the seemingly harmless emerges a rich examination of order, chance, decision, and societal roles.
Art in the Context of Closed Custody
Open Atelier 63 focuses on closed custody and creates a space for artistic expression. The resulting objects give visible form to the thoughts and feelings of people in detention. Thus, the exhibition connects aesthetic experience with cultural education and raises questions about freedom, limitation, identity, and human self-determination.
Material, Spatial Impact, and Exhibition Atmosphere
The works thrive on the tension between familiar game motifs and their unusual use. Bright colors, serial forms, and fragmented signs meet a serious social context. It is precisely this contrast that shapes the art experience: The exhibition atmosphere invites visitors to see familiar things in a new light and to reassess their own notions of play, society, and rules.
An Exhibition as a Social Resonance Space
From an art historical perspective, Board Games connects to strategies of object art, assemblage, and participatory art. Pre-existing materials are not only reinterpreted but also carry personal and societal experiences within them. The curation makes visible how artistic practice can facilitate encounters and create a resonance space for reflection even under restrictive conditions.
The exhibition welcomes its visitors with a concentrated examination of works that connect playful forms and existential themes. Those who understand art as an aesthetic experience and social dialogue will find a compelling reason to pause here. A visit to Open Atelier 63 enriches the view of contemporary art and the transformative power of creative work.
