Body Images in Bielefeld: An exhibition that makes beauty standards visible
How do body ideals shape our self-perception? The interactive exhibition Body Images invites visitors to the Knowledge Workshop Bielefeld to explore norm pressure, beauty ideals, and personal experiences related to body image and eating disorders together. The visit combines artistic perspectives with scientific research and opens a protected space for reflection and exchange.
Between Art, Research, and Personal Experience
Central to the exhibition are the projects between lines space – why all my girlfriends have eating disorders and men, bodies, images. They bring together female and male socialized perspectives in dialogue and show how differently societal expectations about the body can work.
The exhibition is aimed at adults and teenagers aged 14 and above. No prior knowledge is required. This open targeting of audiences makes the event experience accessible and creates space for individual questions.
An exhibition that grows through participation
Body Images does not stop at viewing finished works. Visitors can anonymously contribute their own thoughts, experiences, and associations in the form of texts, drawings, or photographs. These contributions become part of the modular exhibition structure and continuously change the presentation.
This creates a lively event atmosphere, where audience sentiments and personal perspectives become immediately visible. The exhibition becomes a collective research space on self-perception, societal structures, and the handling of body images.
Health explained in an understandable and participatory way
The event categorizes body image disorders and eating disorders professionally, without reducing personal experiences to a single explanation. Visitors learn about scientific and biographical viewpoints, question beauty standards, and engage with the question of why there is so much pressure on external appearance.
The offer was developed by the Design Department of Bielefeld University in cooperation with the Psychosomatics of Ruhr University Bochum. The exhibition is part of GENIALE 2026 on the topic How are we doing?
Conclusion: Expanding one's view on body ideals
Body Images offers a sensitive, interactive, and informative exhibition experience in Bielefeld. Those wishing to better understand societal beauty standards, question their own thought patterns, and encounter different perspectives will experience an inspiring visit at the Knowledge Workshop with space for personal engagement.
