Living is Luxury: Living Culture Between Aesthetics and Social Questions

The special exhibition Living is Luxury at the Huelsmann Museum focuses on the design of living spaces and the question of what luxury actually means at home. On October 21, 2026, the exhibition invites you to the historic rooms of the former director's villa of the Ravensberger Spinning Mill.

When Rooms Tell Stories

Furnishings reveal social status, craftsmanship, and personal ideas of well-being. The exhibition looks at selected objects that can be understood as luxurious due to their precious materials, design quality, or their special history.

Work Examination Between Design History and Present

The presentation connects applied arts, interior, and design history. Furniture, living objects, and historical forms enter new contexts and open up a sensory examination of materials, surfaces, proportions, and spatial effects. The curation invites a re-evaluation of familiar notions of furnishing and representation.

Luxury as a Social Concept

The exhibition looks beyond shiny surfaces. In times of rising housing costs and increasing homelessness, the fundamental question arises whether safe and secure living space must be considered luxury. Thus, the museum connects art historical expertise with cultural education and a contemporary social perspective.

Cooperations and Cultural Education

Living is Luxury is created in cooperation with the Department of Image and Art History at Bielefeld University and the artist Paula Bansmann. Public tours, a design discussion, and further accompanying offerings deepen the engagement with living culture, design, and individual living spaces.

Conclusion: An Art Experience About Home

Visitors can expect an inspiring aesthetic experience between furniture history, design, social reflection, and personal memory. The exhibition makes visible how closely living, identity, and cultural values are interconnected. Anyone who wants to experience living spaces as expressions of history and life concepts should discover this special art experience live at the Huelsmann Museum.
