When the Earth Becomes Tangible: Lyoudmila Milanova's Perception Experiment in Bielefeld
The opening My Strength Is Your Inertia by Lyoudmila Milanova presents an unusual approach to geophysical and atmospheric processes at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Bielefeld. The exhibition translates real-time data from the Earth into physical expressions and combines media art, nature observation, and technological research into an immersive artistic experience.
A Digital Body as a Resonance Space
At the center is a 3D-scanned body that reacts as a digital avatar to forces outside of human perception. Milanova transforms measurement data not into sober diagrams, but into a sensually experienced installation. The body appears as a resonance space for planetary processes: it not only measures but also reacts, receives, and makes the invisible physically understandable.
Between Nature, Technology, and Perception
The exhibition moves at the intersection of installation, video art, digital media art, and scientific visualization. Milanova's artistic practice explores the relationship between natural processes and their technical representations. Her works question how the human attempt to capture and control nature alters our perception.
The atmosphere of the exhibition arises from the tension between data flow and bodily sensation, precision and intuition. Forms, movements, and digital reactions open up an aesthetic experience in which geophysical forces do not remain abstract but instead appear as dynamics and resonance.
Lyoudmila Milanova: Media Art with a Scientific Perspective
Lyoudmila Milanova was born in 1979 in Varna, Bulgaria, and lives and works in Cologne. She studied theater, film, and television science at the University of Cologne as well as audiovisual media art at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. Her work includes video installations, kinetic objects, photography, stage design, and choreography for dance performances.
In her work, Milanova often deals with ephemeral materials and natural phenomena such as fog, clouds, and light. Exhibitions at the Bonn Art Museum, Kunsthaus NRW Kornelimünster, the Artothek in Cologne, as well as international presentations in Seoul, New York, and Moscow mark her position in the field of contemporary media and installation art.
Opening and Exhibition Period
The opening begins on November 5, 2026, at 7:00 PM. Prof. Dr. Eleonora Rohland from ZiF will greet the attendees, and the introduction will be given by Prof. Johanna Schwarz from Siegen. Admission is free, registration via the event page is required.
The exhibition is accessible from November 5, 2026, to February 25, 2027, during the core working hours of ZiF: Mondays to Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM and Fridays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Conclusion: Planetary Processes as Aesthetic Experience
My Strength Is Your Inertia promises an exhibition that transforms scientific data into a physically close and poetic contemplation of the work. Those interested in contemporary art, digital technologies, natural phenomena, and cultural education will experience a concentrated perception experiment at ZiF. The opening invites visitors to explore the boundaries between body, machine, and Earth live.
