unbearable! – Between Clothing, Body, and Memory

With the exhibition unbearable!, Astrid Konradt-Bock presents a multifaceted connection of objects, painting, drawing, and mixed media at the Producers Gallery Bielefeld. The opening on October 9, 2026, at 7 PM takes place as part of ARTHUR!, when Bielefeld galleries and project spaces open their doors until midnight.

Art between Physicality and Biography

Starting from her project Laundry Pieces, developed since 2003, Astrid Konradt-Bock explores the themes of human, physicality, and clothing. Clothing appears not merely as a textile shell but as a carrier of personal memories, social conventions, and individual identity. References to family history as well as laundry scenes from Mediterranean travels expand the consideration of the work into an intimate, yet culturally significant dimension.

Paper Objects, Painting, and Mixed Media

The exhibition combines paper objects, paintings, drawings, and collages into an open structure. Threads, paper, wire, and textile textures engage in a tense dialogue with surface and line. The materiality of the works demands precise perception: Fragile surfaces, torn contours, and fragmented forms create an exhibition atmosphere between protection, vulnerability, and resistance.

The Unbearable as an Aesthetic Experience

The exhibition title unbearable! works literally and metaphorically. It refers to things that cannot be worn, classified, or easily accepted by society. The works possess an invitation character and open up perspectives on personal biographical experiences. In the aesthetic experience, personal memory, body image, and social attributions encounter each other.

A Bielefeld Artist Position

Astrid Konradt-Bock, born in 1956 in Büren and living in Bielefeld, studied Fine Arts and Art Education in Bielefeld as well as at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Since 1980, she has been working freelance in the field of graphics and painting; since 2004, object and installation have been part of her artistic areas of work. Her museum education work at the Kunsthalle Bielefeld and in Marta Herford connects artistic practice with cultural education and a sensitive communication of art.

Art Experience at the Producers Gallery

The intimate structure of the Producers Gallery supports a concentrated consideration of the works. Visitors experience the exhibits up close and discover how everyday materials become artistic signs. The exhibition invites reflection on clothing as a social cipher, on body and memory, and on the boundaries of the bearable.

Conclusion: unbearable! promises an intense art experience between object art, painting, and personal memory. The exhibition connects sensual material experience with art-historical relevant questions about identity, physicality, and social norms. A visit to the Producers Gallery opens new perspectives on familiar things – and enriches the aesthetic experience sustainably.
