UNMUTE: Art, Voices and Encounters at Bielefeld Central Station
The pop-up exhibition UNMUTE brings the art session FLOWER directly to Bielefeld Central Station. On October 17 and 18, 2026, art prints from the open art project will be presented in the forecourt, accompanied by voices, interviews, and sounds from the project environment.
Art comes to where people live
UNMUTE follows a consistently participatory understanding of art and cultural education. The exhibition arose from the desire to reach people who were unable to attend a previous presentation. Under the guiding idea that art may change its location and enable encounters, the public space at the station becomes a temporary exhibition venue.
Art prints from the art session FLOWER
At the center are works by people who paint, draw, and develop their own images in the art session FLOWER. The open studio sees itself as a meeting place for collaborative artistic work and gives people from different life situations space for aesthetic experience, expression, and observation of works.
An audiovisual art experience
The exhibition combines visual works with voices, interviews, and sounds. This creates a sensory exhibition atmosphere in which images are not viewed in isolation, but enter into relationships with personal experiences and audible perspectives. The connection of art print, sound, and public space expands the classical presentation form into an accessible installation in everyday life.
Art historical context and social participation
The UNMUTE project builds on photographic and film work in the vicinity of Bielefeld Central Station that has existed since 2009. The photographer and multimedia artist Kyungwon Shin makes artistic works and voices of people visible who often find themselves unheard in public spaces. Since 2024, the weekly art session FLOWER has developed from this.
Conclusion: An exhibition as an invitation to listen
UNMUTE promises an immediate art experience between the station, everyday life, and encounters. The exhibition shows how painting, photography, sound, and social participation come together into an open form of cultural education. Those who want to not only observe contemporary art but experience it as a living, communal experience should visit the forecourt of Bielefeld Central Station.
