Exploring Emotions: Psychology to Participate in Bielefeld
Why do we recognize joy, anger, or sadness in faces and voices? The open offering Why do we feel what we feel? invites you to try out psychological emotion research for yourself on October 22, 2026, at the Knowledge Workshop Bielefeld. Children from 6 years old, teenagers, adults, and families will discover at interactive stations how emotions are perceived, examined, and experienced in the body.
Emotion research becomes an aesthetic experience
The exhibition atmosphere combines scientific precision with immediate artwork observation. Instead of just observing research, visitors become active themselves: They recognize facial expressions on a computer – clearly visible, pixelated, or embedded in a group – and observe how perception changes under different conditions.
Faces, voices, and bodily sensations
Through headphones, participants listen to short everyday situations and assign appropriate emotions. Another participation station directs attention to one’s own body: Where do you feel joy, tension, or sadness? The sensory connection of hearing, seeing, and feeling makes psychological research immediately palpable and opens up a special form of cultural education.
When experiences shape perception
The stations show that emotions are not read the same way by all people. Stressful experiences like bullying can influence how well emotions are recognized in others. This leads to central questions in clinical psychology and psychotherapy: How do emotion, personal experience, and mental health relate to each other?
Research to participate in
Researchers are on-site, answering questions and providing insights into scientific methods. Those who wish can contribute their own data and thus actively participate in current emotion research. The event was developed by the University of Bielefeld, Faculty of Psychology and Sports Sciences, Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy unit.
For families and curious explorers
The open offering is aimed at adults, teenagers from 14 years old, children from 10 to 13 years old, children from 6 to 9 years old, and families. Children under 10 years need adult accompaniment. Registration is not required.
Conclusion: Understanding emotions, experiencing research
This artistic experience in the broader sense connects scientific curiosity with sensory experience and personal reflection. Those who want to understand how perception, emotion, and mental health interact will experience a vivid and educational program in the Knowledge Workshop. The participation stations offer new perspectives on personal experiences – a visit is especially worthwhile for families and young researchers.
