All Bauhaus or what? Experience typography and book printing yourself
The workshop Print Workshop: All Bauhaus or what? invites you on November 15, 2026, to an intense aesthetic experience at the Historical Museum Bielefeld. The focus is on elementary typography and book printing around 1926 – an era when function, clarity, and geometric order shaped the visual thinking of modernity.
The New Typography as an Expression of a New Era
On the occasion of the relocation of the Bauhaus school from Weimar to Dessau 100 years ago, the workshop examines the influence of the Bauhaus on type design and print art of the Weimar Republic. The New Typography turned against the ornamental form language of historicism and developed a factual, precise, and effective design language.
The examination of the works leads to the actors, ideas, and works of avant-garde design from the 1920s. Typography does not appear merely as a means of conveying information, but as an independent art form between lettering, space, rhythm, and visual communication.
Type Setting, Printing Ink, and the Sensual Power of Craftsmanship
In the practical part, participants gain insights into the traditional craft of book printing. The handling of type setting makes the materiality of writing directly experienceable: individual letters are set, spaces are composed, and a printed image emerges from typographical decisions.
The print workshop combines art historical expertise with one's own design practice. Between metal, paper, printing ink, and mechanical precision, a special exhibition atmosphere is created, where historical technology and creative present meet. The art experience is based on the interplay of observation, discussion, and hands-on experimentation.
Cultural Education for Youth and Adults
The workshop is aimed at adults and youth aged 16 and above. Klaus Seelig and Christian Ring provide an overview of the New Typography, its formative actors, and the visions of the avant-garde. The combination of lecture, examination of works, and practical work opens a vivid access to the art history of the Bauhaus and the development of modern design.
This makes cultural education immediate: historical forms are not only explained but experienced hands-on. Participants experience how individual letters, conscious proportions, and clear compositional principles create a visual language.
Conclusion: Experience Modern Design in its Original Form
The print workshop promises an intense art experience for all those interested in Bauhaus, graphic design, typography, and historical printing techniques. Those wanting to understand the aesthetics of the 1920s and simultaneously experience it practically will find an inspiring place for aesthetic experience and cultural exchange at the Historical Museum Bielefeld. Registration is worthwhile, as the number of participants is limited to a maximum of eight people.
