Expedition Microbiome: A fascinating journey into our invisible community of life

What lives on our skin, in our mouths, and in our intestines? During the Expedition Microbiome, children, families, and curious adults discover the trillions of tiny microorganisms that accompany and influence our bodies. The free open event takes place as part of the GENIALE Campus Day at the University of Bielefeld.

Experience microorganisms under the microscope

Under the microscope, what is otherwise hidden becomes visible. With small hands-on experiments, illustrative informational materials, and a microbiome quiz, the event conveys scientific connections in a playful and understandable way. This creates a vivid event experience between research, discovery, and practical involvement.

Health, nutrition, and antibiotics explained in simple terms

The expedition shows what role the microbiome plays in health and diseases. Visitors learn how bodies and microorganisms communicate and how nutrition or antibiotics can influence the microbial community. Fermented foods are also the focus, making access to current health research particularly tangible.

Science for the whole family to engage with

The open event is aimed at adults, teenagers aged 14 and up, seniors, and children of various age groups. The organization is jointly managed by the Wissenswerkstadt Bielefeld, the University of Bielefeld, the Medical Faculty OWL, and the Omics Core Facility – NGS/CeBiTec. Children under ten years old need to be accompanied by an adult.
