When a blank book becomes a creative counterpart

A blank book initially appears quiet and unwritten. However, in this multi-day autumn holiday workshop of the Bielefeld City Library, it develops its own temperament: It presents creative tasks, encourages design, and invites children to create a personal story page by page.

Book Design as a Literary Experience

From October 20 to 22, 2026, the children's room of the central library will transform into a workshop for young book designers. Children aged seven to nine will encounter the book not only as a finished medium but as an open space for images, ideas, and their own words.

The concept combines reading promotion, language arts, and visual work. Participants will paint, design, and fill their book with individual ideas. Thus, a creative unique piece emerges that can be taken home at the end of the workshop.

Imagination, Language, and Personal Expression

The workshop offers a playful approach to literature. From a blank page, a narrative trail develops; from a task, an image; from a thought, a short story. This combination of book design and creative writing enhances the joy of language and gives children the experience of storytelling themselves.

The reading atmosphere of a library merges with the concentrated energy of an open creative workshop. Amidst paper, colors, and their own words, a literary experience is created that understands reading not as a passive activity but as a creative process.
