Democracy education begins in every subject

How can democracy be conveyed in daily school life – not just in politics lessons, but also in language, art, sports, sciences, and all other subjects? The BiConnected workshop at the Bielefeld School of Education invites teachers, trainee teachers, and staff in after-school care to develop practical impulses for democratic lesson design.

Practical Methods for Teaching

The focus will be on systematic approaches from democracy education and concrete exercises for school practice. The workshop will explore what characterizes democracy as a form of government, a form of society, a way of life, and a method, and what competencies students need for a democratic society.

Betzavta and Social Justice & Diversity

Particular attention will be paid to two concepts: Betzavta – More than a Democracy, a method from the Adam Institute in Israel, and Social Justice & Diversity. Both approaches open perspectives on participation, diversity, equality, and the constructive handling of different interests.

For Educational Professionals in Bielefeld

The event is aimed at teachers of secondary levels I and II, trainee teachers, and staff in after-school care. As part of the phase-crossing BiConnected workshop program, the event connects professional reflection with applicable ideas for lesson planning and school development.

Organization and Participation

The workshop will be led by Democrat Ramadani from the Bielefeld School of Education. The event will take place on Monday, October 12, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 5:45 PM. Participation is free of charge. Registration is required by September 28, 2026.

Conclusion

The workshop offers space for new ideas, methodological security, and practical engagement with democracy education across the entire curriculum. Those who want to shape teaching as a place of lived participation, diversity, and responsibility will experience a focused afternoon with valuable impulses for their own educational work in Bielefeld.
