InterAmerican (Dis)Entanglements: How the Americas and the World are Changing
On October 21 and 22, 2026, international scholars will gather at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research at Bielefeld University for the conference Shifting Worlds: InterAmerican (Dis)Entanglements. This two-day event will focus on political, social, economic, ecological, and cultural transformation processes in the Americas and their global entanglements.
International Perspectives on a Changing World
The Focus Area SHIFT investigates how geopolitical constellations, competing knowledge orders, moral economies, and technological and creative developments shape the Americas. The conference combines literature and cultural studies, history, social sciences, economics, biology, and other disciplines into a multifaceted scientific exchange.
Four Panels, Many Connections
The program consists of four thematic focuses: Geopolitical Constellations examines political ideologies and authoritarianism. Orders of Knowledge questions indigenous philosophies and ecological knowledge. Moral Economy analyzes changing economic moral values and political connections. Technology and Creativity focuses on algorithmic racism and the implications of artificial intelligence.
Scientific Exchange at ZiF
The atmosphere at ZiF creates the ideal setting for focused conversations, critical discussions, and new perspectives. Graduates, educators, researchers, students, and early-career scientists will experience a conference that questions established narratives and opens up views on the complex relationships between North, Central, and South America and the global world.
Organization and Scientific Leadership
The event is organized by the Center for InterAmerican Studies at Bielefeld University. The conference is conceptualized by Prof. Dr. Kirsten Kramer and Prof. Dr. Olaf Kaltmeier and coordinated by Dr. Matti Steinitz. The Focus Area SHIFT is based on the entanglement approach developed in Bielefeld and connects research on societies, knowledge systems, ecologies, and global power relations.
The event is public and admission is free. The conference will take place from October 21, 2026, at 10:00 AM to October 22, 2026, at 5:00 PM.
