Milena Michiko Flašar opens the doors to a poetically surreal world in Bielefeld

On Friday, October 9, 2026, Milena Michiko Flašar is a guest for the second time at the Bielefeld Literary Days. In the Central Library at Neumarkt, the Austrian author will read from her collection of stories The Hare in the Moon and take the audience into tales where familiar reality becomes dazzling.

Between Window Reflections and Fading Certainties

Who reflects in the nighttime window: one's own self or already another? Flašar's stories revolve around doubling, disappearance, solitude, and unfulfilled longings. Her characters move in a world where the skin becomes permeable, the air seems thinner, and the everyday takes on a surreal twist.

Japanese Stories with Universal Resonance

The Hare in the Moon gathers poetic tales from a modern yet mythically charged Japan. A writer suffering from writer's block falls in love with a fox, former lovers become voyeurs out of boredom, a woman experiences a tsunami first through the media, and a passionate reader loses first his brother, then his wife in a mysterious way.

Milena Michiko Flašar combines literary precision with a light, humorous, yet simultaneously unsettling tone. Her linguistic artistry shifts the boundaries between realistic narrative, fairy tales, and fantastic literature. At the same time, she examines forms of isolation as carefully as the longing for closeness and the question of how reality comes into being.

An Author between Contemporary Literature and Cultural Dialogue

Flašar was born in 1980 in St. Pölten, studied German and Romance languages in Vienna and Berlin, and lives in Vienna. Her novel I Named Him Tie has received numerous awards, been translated into several languages, and adapted for the stage. For her literary work, she has received, among other honors, the Evangelical Book Prize 2024, the Austrian Book Prize FRANCE 2024, the Literature Prize of the A-and-A Cultural Foundation 2025, and the Outstanding Artist Award 2025.

The reading in Bielefeld thus offers more than a classic book presentation: it is a meeting with an important voice of contemporary German-language literature. The evening will be moderated by Angelika Teller. Reinhold Westerheide on guitar and Elmar Lappe on drums will musically accompany the reading and expand the intimate reading atmosphere with their own sound level.

Literary Experience in the Central Library

Entry and box office begin at 7:30 PM, if tickets are still available. The event evening starts at 8:00 PM and is expected to end around 10:00 PM. The regular admission fee is 15 euros, the reduced admission is 10 euros. Additionally, a livestream ticket is available for 7 euros.

Conclusion: Visitors can expect a focused reading full of poetic images, quirky characters, and delicate transitions between reality and fantasy. Those who appreciate contemporary literature, Japanese motifs, and linguistically artistic narratives will experience an evening of special atmospheric density at the Bielefeld Literary Days.
