When the Path to Therapy Becomes an Obstacle Course
On Friday, November 6, 2026, the Knowledge Workshop Bielefeld invites you to the Escape Game Obstacle Course to Therapy. From 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM, participants will experience the barriers faced by families with refugee backgrounds on their way to therapy for a mentally stressed child.
An Escape Game with Real Background
The event combines interactive tasks with scientifically evidenced experiences. The obstacles are based on research findings from the SchulBasis project of the University of Bielefeld, which surveyed more than 70 children and 40 professionals. The focus is on access to mental health care and the structural hurdles that affected families must overcome in their daily lives.
Perspective Shift Instead of Lecture
In the escape room format, participants immerse themselves in a situation that makes social and organizational barriers directly tangible. Each task delves deeper into a complex care system where information, responsibilities, and access are crucial. Afterwards, the experiences are jointly evaluated and possible solutions discussed.
Expertise, Exchange, and New Perspectives
The offer is aimed at professionals from the social, educational, and health sectors as well as anyone interested. It addresses the unequal opportunities in accessing mental health care, specific everyday hurdles for families with refugee backgrounds, and a more sensitive approach to affected individuals. Prior knowledge is not required.
An Event as Part of GENIALE 2026
The offer was developed by the University of Bielefeld, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Conflict and Violence Research, as well as the Faculty of Psychology and Sports Science. The event is part of GENIALE 2026 under the motto How Are We? and will take place in Seminar Room 1, the Oberstübchen of the Knowledge Workshop.
Conclusion: Recognizing Obstacles and Opening Doors
Visitors can expect an intense perspective shift with interactive challenges, solid research findings, and a subsequent discussion. Those who want to understand why the path to therapy is particularly difficult for some families will experience an unusual and educational event format here. The free registration is worthwhile for all who want to make care more just and accessible.
