On the trail of the Franciscans to the Jostberg
A hike through Bielefeld's local history takes place on October 3, 2026, to the ruins of the former Franciscan monastery at Jostberg. Together with Michael Stanke from the Historical Society, participants will explore a historically significant ridge in the Teutoburg Forest and discover why the Franciscans later abandoned their first settlement outside the city's gates.
History visible in the forest
The path leads over a Napoleonic hollow way to the monastery ruins. On site, the foundations of the late Gothic monastery church are still preserved. They remind us of a settlement that emerged in the late 15th century around a pilgrimage site dedicated to Saint Jodokus. The name Jostberg originates from the folk form of Jodokus.
Why the Franciscans left the Jostberg
The Franciscans settled at Jostberg, but the secluded location brought significant difficulties. Water shortages in summer, winter weather, and the distance to the city complicated monastic life as well as pastoral care and almsgiving. In 1507, the relocation to Bielefeld was approved; by 1511, the new St. Jodokus Church was built at today's Klosterplatz.

The approximately 90-minute city and landscape tour combines movement with historical expertise. On the way to the old hollow way and during the walk around the ruins, medieval pilgrimage, Franciscan order history, and the development of Bielefeld's cultural heritage are vividly presented. The return journey leads back to the starting point over the Galgenheide.

The meeting point is the turning loop of line 29 at Schildhof, Haller Weg 73. Sturdy and comfortable footwear is recommended for the terrain.
