Insight at the Push of a Button: Experience the Fascinating History of X-Rays

How did a spectacular discovery become a routine medical examination today? The workshop Insight at the Push of a Button invites you to an illustrative journey through the history of X-rays on November 11, 2026, in the Knowledge Workshop Bielefeld.

Discover Historical Technology Up Close

The focus is on original X-ray tubes from the early days of radiology. Observing historical instruments makes visible the technical challenges that the first researchers faced. Participants follow how the tubes developed step by step and what prerequisites had to be established for reliable X-ray examinations.

Between the History of Science and Film Image

A brief introduction provides the basics of the discovery of X-rays. A film about the early industrial production of X-ray tubes complements the historical context. A scene from the feature film The Magic Mountain also illustrates how an X-ray examination took place around 1900 and what effects this novel technique might have had on patients at the time.

Learning to Read X-Ray Images

The artistic experience of this special knowledge event arises from precise observation: Participants then look at X-ray images themselves and try to recognize which body parts or changes become visible. The aesthetic experience of transparent image spaces is connected with medical historical expertise and cultural education.

For Adults, Youth, and Seniors

The workshop is aimed at adults, youth aged 14 and older, and seniors. The offer was developed by the Hospital Museum Bielefeld and is part of GENIALE 2026.
