Menstruation matters!: Who determines the rules surrounding the period?

Menstruation affects many people – and simultaneously shapes the everyday life of all. The workshop Menstruation matters! invites you on Thursday, November 12, 2026, to the Knowledge Workshop Bielefeld to collectively question societal rules, taboos, and expectations surrounding the period.

Between everyday life, language, and health

The focus is on the concept of menstrual etiquette: What rules of behavior apply when dealing with menstruation? What is openly spoken, and what remains hidden? And who actually decides what is considered appropriate or unpleasant?

A brief professional input opens the workshop. Following that, the discussion will center on language, personal everyday experiences, and the question of how social norms influence the perception of menstrual health. The event combines knowledge transfer with exchange and reflection.

Participate, reflect, develop new perspectives

In a discourse exercise, the group gathers how menstruation is spoken about in everyday life. A self-test helps to discover one's own menstrual etiquette and make habitual perspectives conscious. This creates an open event atmosphere where knowledge, experience, and social responsibility come together.

At the end, the focus turns to the future: What needs to change in dealing with menstruation? And how can everyday life be shaped to reduce stigma and prejudices and place the needs of menstruating people more in the center?

Science meets event planning

The offering was developed by Bielefeld University, Faculty of Health Sciences. Prof. Dr. Céline Miani and Anna Lisa Schmid are examining how reproductive health can be addressed in a more understandable, just, and open manner. As part of the SchLaDo Women's Health initiative, the workshop is integrated into GENIALE 2026, which makes physical and mental health accessible through workshops, lectures, and hands-on offerings.

Visitors should bring a pen for the self-test. The event is aimed at all those interested – explicitly also men, as menstruation is a societal topic that goes beyond individual experiences.

Conclusion: An evening for more openness

Menstruation matters! connects professional impulses, self-reflection, and shared conversation. Visitors experience an informative workshop with clear societal relevance and gain new perspectives on menstrual health, language, and everyday life. Those who want to understand taboos and contribute to a more open approach will experience an inspiring evening at the Knowledge Workshop Bielefeld.
